good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." live pictures of that fatal accident in daly city. it's shut down one direction of 280 completely. ktvu's claudine wong is on the scene and is gonna tell us when that -- at least one rain may reopen. we will check in with her shortly. good morning. it's friday, january 3rd. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather with steve right now. how is it looking? >> pretty quiet. really, really cold as we head towards the weekend. some of the coldest air will arrive sunday night into monday, it will bees like it will be below zero. a little breezy. really, really tough conditions for those interested in cincinnati and san diego, it looks like some snow might be developing in cincinnati sunday morning. we'll see. 30s, 40s to 50 degrees. 45 half moon bay, 36, sacramento. 34 ukiah.

except for the haley clouds, not much is changing. that's the leading edge of the bitterly cold air morning into the northern plains and will sweep across the country. just incredible except for us here. really quiet. >> thank you. 7:01. we're starting with the breaking news we've been following for the past 90 minutes. a deadly freeway crash involving a pedestrian. it's causing major delays on the border between daly city and san francisco. ktvu's claudine wong joining us with this update from the crash scene on intersection 280. claudine? >> reporter: we have new details about what exactly happened out here. the chp right now trying to get some lanes of southbound 280 back open. but let's take you through what we've learned about what happened. take a look behind me. you can see two vehicles, a car and suv. the chp says about 5:30 this

morning, those two cars crashed. now, there was a woman in that car who has been taken to the hospital. we don't know her condition. but the suv driver, that is the driver that witnesses tell the chp came running down the freeway. hopped over the median to the southbound direction of 280 and went running down the freeway and got a fairly good distance before he got hit by at least one vehicle. now, we don't know where that vehicle is. they are considering this a hit and run and they are looking for any kind of vehicle with front-end damage that might have been involved in hitting that pedestrian. this accident happened about 5:30 and as you can see, there's no traffic moving in the southbound lanes at all on 280. on the northbound direction, if we pan over, they do have a couple of lanes open. traffic is moving. it's moving very, very slowly. the chp wants to get this area back open as soon as possible but there's a lot of debris. the victim is still on the freeway and this is taking

time. we did talk to a couple of drivers who were stuck in the northbound direction. they've been there for more than an hour. here's what they had to say about the wait. >> 30 minutes, 40 minutes. >> reporter: are you patient at this point? >> yeah, my office just on the other side of the hill i was getting off right over here. sad what happened to this guy. >> there's a lot of emergency vehicles. we didn't know the extent of the accident until the officers said there had been a fatal. >> reporter: okay. if we come back out here live, you are now looking at the northbound direction of 280 where the accident happened. there are a couple of tow trucks. they've kind of stopped a little bit of traffic to get them in this area to get these two vehicles out of the way and get this side back open to traffic. on the southbound direction, though, again, that is still blocked off. the medical examiner is on scene and they told me within the last ten minutes, they are hoping once they get the victim taken from the freeway, get

some debris cleared up, they are hoping to get one lane back open to try to get these folks moving again. if you are stuck in this, you are kind of stuck. but if you are just trying to get out your door and trying to get around this, sal castanedo joining us from the traffic center with alternate routes. sal? we're looking at alternate routes for you. we'll put up a map just to show you where the accident is. i drew a red circle there, in daly stnd, southbound 280. the best thing if you are leaving san francisco, use 101 if you can. just avoid the whole thing. if you do want to -- if you live in the area, let's say you live here in the lake merced area of san francisco, just get on the freeway after john daly. just go down and get on the freeway after john daly. you should be fine. the accident, as i mentioned, is up the road. you can get on the freeway, perhaps even down at basera. that would be good. but 101 is the best alternate. these are the live pictures that we have of the crash.

they are getting some cars through in the northbound direction, as claudine mentioned, but no cars right now are getting through in the southbound direction as we look down the freeway at the southbound direction. that's where the person was hit and killed. all right. let's move along to other traffic pictures. we don't have a lot going on right now when it comes to the morning commute. i think a lot of people still have this week off. bay bridge toll plaza, for example, is much lighter than it normally is at this hour. san mateo bridge westbound 92. that traffic looks good out to the peninsula. now, let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. 7:06. happening now, 100 million people are in the path of a giant winter storm pounding the eastern united states. parts of massachusetts have already received two feet of snow. the first nor'easter is bringing subzero-degree windchills. blizzard warns remain in effect from cape kond to long -- cape cod to long island.

a state of emergency has been issued for new york state. >> stay out of your cars. if you don't need to go out, please don't go out. we want to make sure that people are safe. we want them to be in a warm location. >> the big storm is driving strong winds off the coast. the high tides are expected to cause flooding along the massachusetts coast. the snow and frigid cold is shutting down schools and government offices for a second straight day. all public schools in new york city are also closed. people are being urged to stay indoors and avoid driving on dangerous roads. 7:07. that snowstorm in the northeast has led to almost 2,000 flight cancellations all over the country this morning. the bay area has not been spared. ktvu's janine de la vega is live at sfo with the very latest on cancellations out there. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. well, the situation here at sfo is not as bad compared to other

airport, especially those that are back east. last time i checked, it was nine canceled flights out of sfo. most of the other flights that are departing right now are on time. but people who are headed back east are still concerned. now, the heavy snowfall in the northeast and midwest is causing a lot of problems for airports there. the nim of canceled flights in the u.s. keeps growing every hour. flighttracker.com is reporting nearly 1800 canceled flights. there's about a thousand delays. the airport's hardest hit are newark, la guardia, philadelphia, boston, and j.f.k. at boston's logan airport, officials grounded all flights overnight until about 5:00 a.m. this morning. and j.f.k. was closed overnight. according to flight tracker it was supposed to reopen now at 7:00 a.m. passengers who are traveling that r direction and departing from -- that direction and are departing are worried about the situation. we spoke to one traveler headed to new york. >> she said there's 6 inches of

snow in central park and 8 inches in newark. just hoping to get back. >> i'm heading to chicago. i know it's really, really cold there. a lot of snow. >> reporter: what is the airline telling you? >> they are telling me so far we're on time. we'll see what happens when i get in there. airports are encouraging travelers to check their flight status online or call. while there don't seem to be many delays, the arriving flights is a different story. most of those are either canceled, coming from that direction, again, there are delays from those arriving flights. so again, just make sure you call if you are departing and if you are about to pick up somebody to do the same. look online. reporting live from sfo, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. for the latest information on travel delays and that storm back east, make sure you keep watching us here on channel 2 and follow us on twitter and facebook. we'll post updates about lowell and national travel delays

throughout the entire day. 7:09 this morning. crews are still watching out for hot spots from a sub born grass fire near a popular marin county shopping maul. it started after 11:00 last night in a marsh area east of the village shopping mall. a ktvu news crew was on the scene just moments later. investigators say the flames spread quickly after starting in a homeless camp. corte madera's fire chief says propane tanks at the homeless camp created a hazard for the firefighters. >> the larger propane tanks when they get heated to a certain extent, they vent and can sometimes explode. so some of those did out there. the ones used for camping stoves and that sort of thing. this poses a risk to firefighters obviously. >> no one was hurt. investigators are now trying to determine if someone in the homeless camp started the fire. and this fire in the dry grass comes after the driest year on record in marin county,

dating all the bay back to the 1870s. steve paulson tells us only 7 to 10 inches of rain fell across the county last year. the annual average is 52 inches. the county will consider water rationing later this year. 7:10. san francisco's facing a very important deadline today. it's in connection with last year's deadly asiana airline crash. the lawyers for the family of one of the victims want to see all of the videorecorded by -- video recorded. the city attorney has until noontime to hand over the video. the family of a young woman killed plans to sue the city. investigators conclude the young woman was hit by a fire truck responding to the crash of asiana flight 214 on july 6th. a former advisory to queen juan will now one against -- jean quan will now one against

her. dan siegel has known mayor quan since the 1906s when they were both activists at uc berkeley. all right. 7:11. well, green bay's frozen tundra will really live up to its name this weekend. the possible record cold temperatures the 49ers will face when they battle the packers in the playoff. also, a california priest killed in a church. major trouble in a crash in a daly city. the new development in two minutes that will make for a better commute for some of the people stuck in the crash. well, the coldest air since early february 1996 will move into most of the country.

there's new information about san jose's first homicide of 2014. investigators tell the mercury news no one called 911 for almost an hour. earlier yesterday morning, the male victim was shot but he still managed to reach the front yard of a duplex on south 33rd and east san antonio streets. according to the paper, tenants looked out the windows to check what was happening but they didn't see anything. later a woman returning home found the man face down in her driveway. the victim still has not been identify fid -- identified. a humboldt county man faces murder charges. police found the body of eric

freed in a church in eureka after he failed to show up for morning mass. investigators say father freed was killed during a violent structure inside the rechtry. >> it looked like there was some level of struggle in. >> authorities have identified the suspect as 43-year-old gary lee bullock. investigators have not revealed a motive but believe the kills was random. we are getting word that two americans have been detained in libya. the two americans are college basketball players at benghazi university. it's not clear why they were detained. last month, four u.s. military personnel were detained and then later released. california health officials

are warning people to get vaccinated for swine flu after a woman died in southern california. so far more than a dozen people have been hospitalized. and so far, only one person has tested positive for the h1n1 virus. but the testing continues. a swine flu pandemic in 2009 killed at least 150,000 people around the world. as for the flu in general, the cdc is reporting widespread flu outbreaks mainly in the northeast in new york, massachusetts and pennsylvania. but several cases have been reported in the south. in texas, alabama, and louisiana. california we're also seeing a spike in those cases. with high numbers of hospitalizations already, doctors are saying the worst is yet to come. they are saying young children and the people over the age of 30 -- between 30 and 50 are the most at risk. 7:17. people in santa cruz county can now use social media to talk about safety issues in their

community. the sheriff's office began using a free service yesterday called next door. people can sign up by using their addresses. users will be able to read what others are saying about the area. the sheriff's office will not be able to access users' websites, contact information or content. 7:17. bicyclists are starting to get excited about a new law later this year designed to keep them safer on the roads. the new law would require drivers to give bikes about 3 feet of clearance when they pass by. the officials say 40% of deadly crashes between bikes and cars happens from behind. this new law takes effect september 16th. it will make california the 22nd state to require such a law. all right. 7:8. we want to check in with sal for another update on that terrible crash on 280. is one direction still closed? >> they are hoping up a lane. i was just on the phone with claudine wong who is at the scene and was just telling me

more about what's happening here. chp told her that the freeway is gonna be closed or at least blocked on the 280 southbound for -- until at least 8:15. northbound traffic has been getting through in one lane and now southbound, some of the cars that were stuck in the closure are being allowed through. these cars were stuck in the closure. no traffic is getting through after that. pretty soon you will see an empty freeway because all traffic is being taken off southbound 280 at mission street exit there, san jose avenue. so southbound will remain closed. northbound, one lane will be opened. northbound will probably open before southbound. i would advise you to avoird the area -- avoid the area if at all possible. 880, we had an earlier crash at fifth in downtown oakland. that's been cleared. but traffic is a little bit slow. even when we have crashes, there aren't any backups. i also want to mention that the

traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza is light. definitely lighter than usual. 7:19. let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. another beautiful sunrise. saw from lacrosse wisconsin, the national weather service just issued a weather alert. monday morning, windchills 60 below. i'm just throw -- some of you may have to go back to the midwest or business or what have you. i mean -- busy travel time. i'm just giving you the heads up, 30, 60 below throughout much of the great lakes. beautiful here. what's new? it's been beautiful here for six months. breezy, very, very cold for sunday. it's going to get colder throughout as the coldest air starts in come in. this is a late game. late sunday into monday. if they play -- i don't think they would play if the game was on monday. all the way down to the deep south. for us, temperatures are above

average. something has to break somewhere, sometime soon. high pressure is going to build in and give us a mild to warm not only day but also weekend. 30s, 40s to upper 40s and almost 50 degrees. william tweety in vallejo said 41 here. another nice spring day. people are getting sarcastic. the snow looks like it's about done here. massachusetts took the bulk of the heavier snow here with about 1 to 2 plus feet. we do have some of the snow and showers starting to move back into green bay. here's at leading edge of that really cold air. that will be sent up into mon tan you a and they are talking to 40, 60 below. for us, high clouds there are signs next week things could change. it doesn't look real promising. 60s to 70. 70 up in clearlake. walnut creek, alamo, 62. livermore, 66. warmer towards san jose.

low 70s. morgan hill, santa cruz, probably capitola it will be close for los gatos. 60s, low, mid, upper on the peninsula. warm, breezy, speebl out to the valley -- especially out to the valley. monday looks good. tuesday will be cooler. 7:22. a make shift memorial in santa rosa that was honoring andy lopez went up in flames. the new information we found out this morning about how the fire started. more problems for the  passengers stranded in antarctica. the new delay that's preventing them from leaving.

for the second time in two weeks, sausalito is dealing with a sewage spill. a crew repairing a ruptured sewer main found the spill on philbert avenue. 500 gallons of raw sewage flowed down storm rains to the park. environmentalists say the

sewage spill is one of hundreds that happen around the bray each other. environmentalists hope to see a full urban comeback by the north american river otter. this otter was seen in richmond back in november. other otters have been reported in los gatos, walnut creek, napa and oakland. there were 600 reports of otters in the bay area during the last two years. that's after decades of only a few sightings. scientists cannot explain the change because no one has intensely studied the river otter. there's yet another delay for those passengers who were stranded on a ship stuck in the ice inant arcty ta. a -- ice in antarctica. now the chinese ship may be stuck in the ice. so the australian icebreaker has been told stay in the area and help out if necessary.

in the meantime, 22 russian crew members are still on the expedition ship waiting for the ice to break up. >> it's fully operational. it's fully prepared to be in the ice. it's well stored and well provisioned. the risks would be low for the crew. >> as for the rescued passengers they are expected to reach australia in the middle of january. today, california will have its first snow survey of the year. but experts are not expecting much from the results. according to the national weather service, northern california just completed its driest year since the weather service started keeping track back in 1921. today's snow survey is expected to be about 20% of normal and that's about a big difference from last year at this time when it was 150% of normal. 7:26. new information now on the suspected salmonella outbreak at a northern california cheese producer. the next company for the company as they try to figure

sunday. very, very cold. breezy cold, temperatures near zero to start and then dropping. it will be unbelievably cold there. for us, high clouds, makes for a lovely, lovely sunrise, but temperatures, 30s, 40s to near 50. we have above average temperatures again, that will hold into the weekend. it looks like maybe a little change early next week. but today and tomorrow anywhere near the coast. santa cruz looks nice. there's your 30s, 40s to almost 50. sfo is 48. the city is 49. a little low off the coast. high pressure inland is giving us high clouds. machine, high clouds, very -- mostly sunny, high clouds. very hazy. a lot of 60s, upper 60s to near 0. back -- near 70. back to the desk. a deadly freeway crash involving a pedestrian is causing major delays between daly city and san francisco. claudine wong joins us with this update from the crash scene. it's on interstate 280.

claudine? >> reporter: in just the last minute, they opened up another lane to traffic here in the northbound direction of 280. you can see they are rolling by the scene. the last of the tow trucks here on the side of the road, they've pulled the vehicles involved away and they are hoping to get this side of the freeway back open in just another few minutes and get a full freeway open so that some of this backup can start easing. on the other side of the freeway, though, that's the southbound direction. you can see -- in the last couple of minutes we've had the one lane back open, it cleared out the freeway closure and stopped all traffic on this part of the freeway but now they have opened it back up. we do have some more information on just what exactly happened out here. we gotta tell you this accident happened here in the northbound direction right where that tow truck is. but the major part of the investigation is on the southbound direction because that's where the victim was hit and killed. we just talked to a chp taufer and have new details -- officer

and have new details. >> the driver of the gmc tried to get out of his vehicle and did cross the lanes on the northbound side, tried to get to the shoulder. we're not sure exactly why. he came back across the lanes, jumped the center divide and went into the southbound lanes where he was truck. we know he was truck by at least one vehicle. we believe it was possibly more than one. we're asking anyone who knows anything about this traffic collision on the southbound side to come forward. you may not be at fault. we just need to close this report. >> reporter: back out here live, what the chp is asking, again, for right now, anyone who might have witnessed what happened to give them a call. it appears the victim in this case was simply trying to get off the freeway and because of where this accident happened, he was dealing with two different sides of the freeway, one on either side where there was actually an overpass and he couldn't get off. so he was running back and forth. that's not something that the chp wants anyone to do. the other driver involved in the crash stayed in her car. she's at the hospital.

she suffered minor injuries. right now, just complaining of pain. they are hoping to get a statement from her as well. we're thinking they are just about to open this side of the freeway, completely to traffic. that's side of the freeway will be a mess for another 15 minutes or maybe 45 minutes or so. you are still advised to go around this area. sal castanedo joining us now with alternate routes to make sure you can avoid this if you can. sal? >> reporter: all right. claudine, you know, we just saw in your live report there that one lane of southbound 280 is open. but i would still avoid the area. i would show you the area on the map here of what's going on. southbound 280 and northbound 280 are very slow. if you have to travel southbound on the freeway, i would advise you to get on the freeway in daly city after john daly. if you get on after john daly, maybe get on and take el camino real way past the crash, you will be just fine. if you want to go over to 101, that would be a decent

alternate as well leaving san francisco. stay on 101. if you want to get to that part of the peninsula, you can use 380 to look up with 280 again. this is a live picture now of some of the traffic that's getting through. one lane is getting through. i think that's pretty inadequate southbound here. southbound heading down towards south city in san bruno, one lane is getting through. northbound, a couple of lanes getting through. it's still a good area to avoid. let's talk about other traffic. it has been light around the bay. bay bridge, not much of a commute today. 24, highway 4, 680 have been pretty light. likewise for san mateo bridge and the south bay, we haven't talked a lot about the south bay. 101 and 280 and 85 in the south bay are doing well. so is the lower peninsula. if you are not dealing with any of this daly city crash stuff, you are in for a decent commute. 7:35. let's go back to the desk. there are two separate court hearings dealing with 13- year-old jahi mcmath of

oakland. her family and oakland's children's hospital are still battling over what's gonna happen with her next. tara moriarty is in oakland now to tell us about those settlement hearings and talks today. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, yes. there will be two court appearances. the first at 9:00 at alameda county spowr court. that's for a settlement conference and then they will head over to federal court at 11:00. that's where a judge will hear a request for an order requiring feeding tubes to be installed so 13-year-old jahi mcmath can be moved to another facility. jahi has been on life support at children's hospital of oakland since december 12th when doctors pronounced her brain dead. she suffered complications from a tonsillectomy. a hospital spokesperson says to date her family has been unwilling or unable to provide a physician to perform the procedures necessary, transportation or a facility

that would accept a dead person on the ventilator. our hearts go out to them. family member attorney chris dolan accused of hospital of being hell bent on ending jahi's life. theirs say there's no chance -- doctors say there's no chance she will come back to life but the family is certainly hoping for a miracle. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:36. we have new information about the memorial honoring andy lopez. the wooden altar, investigators say the fire early yesterday morning was an accident there. it was started by a burning candle. earlier, there had been some speculation it was intentionally set. volunteers now plan to spend this weekend rebuilding that memorial. 7:37. the fbi is leading the investigation into a fire set by an arsonist at the entrance to the chinese consulate in san

francisco. so far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. a surveillance camera across the street from the consulate caught the fire as it started. this was about 9:30 wednesday night. the person who set the fire is seen getting in and out of a minivan. some nearby residents say the whole thing makes them nervous. >> i thought it was a one-time incident. but at this point, the wheels are turning and i'm wondering if it's -- if it's related to something else that may occur. i'm a little nervous since i live around the corner. >> the consulate says the arsonist splashed two buckets of gasoline on the front of the consulate building and set it on fire. the fbi says it does not appear to be an act of terrorism. well, today, b.a.r.t. union members are scheduled to begin voting on the revised labor contract.

yesterday, b.a.r.t.'s brdz -- board of directors voted. both management and the union leaders admit there's still a lot of hard feelings despite this agreement. >> we're satisfied with the agreement but it will take a long time to heal after the type of campaign that b.a.r.t. district has run against our workers. >> but i think in the end it's good for the unions and for the district and particularly good for the riders. it will bring labor peace. >> b.a.r.t.'s atu members, they are gonna vote today. seiu members vote january 13th. the revised contract takes out the disputed family leave clause that threatened to derail the entire deal. >> we have new information on a suspected salmon fell laul outbreak at a northern california cheese producer. state health officials are working with the family to see if the problem happened at the plant or if it was introduced from outside. the cultured kitchen in west

stocks rising in early trading after a weak start to 2013. the stock market start the new year with a thud yesterday declining on the first day of trading since 2008. trading has been quiet this week before and after the new year holiday and because of the snowstorm that's making it even lighter. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 63. the nasdaq is flat and the s&p is up 4. general mills says it will stop using genetically modified ingredients to make its original cheerios cereal. the company says the oats in the cereal have never her been modified but now it will use

non-gmo cornstarch and sugar as well. the change was made several weeks ago they say and there will be new labels saying there are no gmo ingredients inside. general mills says it does not plan to change any other cereals. a new study shows self- driving cars will become the new normal in the next decade. ihs automotive consultant said there will be 230,000 on the roads in the next 11 years. that will jump to nearly 12 million in the ten years after that once there are more self- driving cars in use, the number of accidents will decline sharply. analysts in the auto industry say 2013 was the best year in nearly a decade. minutes ago, ford announced car sales rose 2% in december. fusion, sedans, fiesta compacts and escape suvs all set

records. sales of chrysler cars jumped 6% in december and 9% for the entire year. gm sales fell more than 6% in december but the company still finished the year with a 7% bump. 7:47. a man is fighting for his life right now after being hit by a car last night in san francisco. it happened on leavenworth at bush street about 5:00. he was jaywalking. investigators say the man was running across the street about 20 feet from the nearest crosswalk just beyond the crest of a hill. the driver was questioned and later released. the injured man is at san francisco general hospital. san francisco-based uber says it cut ties with the driver in involved in up with of those deadly crashes. 57-year-old saed is charged with vehicular manslaughter. now, the company says he wasn't working at the time of the

crash. however, the san francisco examiner reports he told police he was driving around waiting for a fare. police say muzzafar was making a turn on polk and ellis streets on new year's eve when he hit the 6-year-old sophia and her 4-year-old blaur and their mother. sophia was killed. her mother is still listed in critical condition. her brother is listed in fare condition. 7:49. there's a new push for a ballot initiative to fix potholes on california roads by increasing the vehicle license fee. a group called transportation california is proposing a 1% increase in the vehicle license fee to pay for fixing california roads. one problem is that the current source of funding for road repairs, gasoline taxes is shrinking. that is due to more fuel- efficient cars, hybrids and electric vehicles. our time is 7:49. let's check in with sal, you've been very busy today, especially with what's

happening on the peninsula. that's right. going down to daly city and south city, i would recommend that you use 101 instead of 280. 280 southbound down to one lane because chp is investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash. several lanes of southbound 280 are still closed as you can see getting through just after -- just before john daly. if you are in daly city you want to get on the freeway after john daly boulevard, get on -- osh get on at -- or get on at john daly boulevard heading south. northbound is open but there's a slowdown because of a fatal accident. let's take a look at the commute. it's not been much of one at the bay bridge toll plaza. we had a small crash but it didn't cause any slow traffic. the morning commute looks good in san jose. northbound 280, 101 and 85 look pretty good. let's go to steve. all right, sal. thank you. another beautiful morning. i had a nice e-mail from steve bridges, he's up in the tahoe

let's go to the san mateo bridge now and traffic here looks good out to the peninsula with no major problems. by the way, 101 looks good on the peninsula. bay bridge toll plaza has been light. this is certainly not normal. it is light as you drive their oakland to san francisco. we're following breaking news. a deadly frisch crash involving a pedestrian is causing major delays on the border between daly city and san francisco. ktvu's claudine wong joins us with new information about the crash. claudine? >> reporter: well, good morning, sal. yes, it looks like this backup will be here for a while as they continue to investigate the crash. take a look at all of the cars that are lined up as they've only opened up one lane of traffic southbound 280. they are going slower right now because caltrans crews are coming in and putting cones down. what we've just been told. this closure is going to be in place until about 11:00 this morning while they continue to investigate and clean up this freeway. on the opposite side, though,

you can see the northbound direction moving just fine. traffic is moving there. that is actually where the accident happened on that side of the freeway. i want to show you video of the two vehicles involved. it was an suv and a car that got into a crash this morning. the chp tells us this was about 5:30. according to witnesses, for some reason, the suv started careening out of control and then collided with the other car. now, the driver of that car stayed in her car. but the driver of the suv got out. and the chp officer, mike ferguson, tells us what happened next. >> the driver of the gmc suv tried to get out of his vehicle and crossed the lanes of the northbound side. tried to get to the shoulder. we mae not sure why. he came across the lanes, jumped the center divide and went into the southbound lanes where he was truck. he was struck by at least one vehicle, we believe it was possible mow more than one.

possibly more than one. we're asking anyone who knows anything to come forward. you may not be at fault. we just need to close the report. >> reporter: northbound traffic started to slow as they opened the freeway up. we're on the southbound side of this freeway now where this closure remains in place for three out of the four lanes. if we come back out here live, you can see the situation as it stands right before the john daly boulevard exit. you can see those vehicles are stopped but again, they are putting down cones. we're guessing that's because those flares are gonna burn out and they are planning to be here for a while. 11:00 is now your estimate on getting this area back open. so clearly at this point, if you can, you should still avoid 280 in the southbound direction through here if you can. live here on 280, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:05. happening now -- 100 million people are said to be in the path of a giant winter storm

that's pounding the country this morning. there are 22 states in the storm's path. at least nine storm-related deaths have been reported. boxford, massachusetts has had the most snow. blizzard warnings still in effect from cape cod, massachusetts, to new york's long island and new york state is under a state of emergency. several major new york highways were actually sutt down during the night. the new york thruway which connects to albany, it closed for the first time since superstorm sandy. the thruway and the long island expressway opened this morning. a tragic story in pennsylvania. one death indirectly blamed on the storm. a machine operator was killed when a pile of rock salt collapsed on his vehicle near this landfill. he was moving rock salt to be used to de-ice the roads. but he was buried under a salt pile. it took more than an hour to

recover his body. 8:06. that snowstorm is disrupting air travel across the country this morning with nearly 2,000 flights canceled. of course, bay area airports are feeling the effects. even if you are not heading to the northeast, your plane may be coming in from there. janine de la vega is at sfo with the latest on the cancellations. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, the big rush of morning traveler traffic has sort of slowed town here. most passengers who were headed east that we spoke to were surprised to see that their flights were on time departing headed to the east coast. but, you know, there were several cancellations here but just not as much as the amount that cities like new york are experiencing. now, the heavy snowfall in the northeast and midwest is causing -- is causing a lot of problems for airports there. the number of canceled flights keeps growing. he every hour, flight tracker is reporting nearly 1900 canceled flights. there's about 1400 delays in

the u.s. the airport's hardest hit with new york, la guardia, philadelphia, boston and j.f.k. at logan airport, officials grounded all flights overnight until 5:00 a.m. j.f.k. was closed overnight but it did open an hour or so ago. we spoke to passengers departing from sfo who are headed that direction. >> i was kind of ready for some drays. i brought a -- delays. i brought a book. i think it will be okay. >> reporter: right now it's showing on time? >> i think so. yeah. that's what it just said. fingers crossed. >> reporter: airports are encouraging all travelers to check their flight status online or call before arriving to the airport. while there don't seem to be too many delays for departing flights, arriving flights is a different story. several are delayed. we just heard from an airport smokesperson that there have been 13 arrival cancellations. three from boston, five from j.f.k., three from new york, one from philadelphia and one

firefighters. and they can't take a chance of flareups. >> they put a hose line around it. they will be out here throughout the day today to make sure that no hot spots pop up. >> now, no injuries have been reported. investigators still want to know if someone in that homeless camp did start the fire. this fire in the dry grass comes after the driest year on record in marin county. this dates back to the 1870s. you've heard steve paulson telling us only seven to 10 inches of rain fell across the county last year. the annual average is 52 inches. the county will consider water rationing later this year. san francisco is facing an important deadline today in connection with last year's deadly asiana airline flash. lawyers for the family of one -- crash. lawyers for the family of one of the victims want to see all of the videorecorded by the fire trucks and helmet cameras. the city attorney has until

noon to had over videos. the family of the young woman killed plans to sue the city over their daughter's death. federal investigators concluded she was hit by a fire truck responding to the crash of asiana flight 214 at sfo on july 6th. a former visor to oakland mayor jean quan plans to run against quan in the mayor race. dan siegel has known quan since the 1960s when they were both student activists at uc berkeley. siegel was quan's unpaid legal visor when she was elected mayor of oakland in 2010. but he resigned in protest in 2011 when against his advice mayor quan cleared out theock pie oakland encampments from in -- occupy oakland encampments from in front of city hamm. drivers heading from marin county into san francisco, they are now seeing new lane

there's new information about san jose's first homicide of 2014. investigators tell the mercury news no one called 911 for almost an hour. early yesterday morning, the male victim was shot but he

still managed to reach the front yard of a duplex on south 33rd and east san antonio streets. according to the paper, tenants looked out their windows to check what was happening but they didn't see anything. later a woman returning home found the man face down in her driveway. the victim still has not been identified. we are getting word this morning that two americans have been detained in benghazi, libya. a libyan security official says the two americans are college basketball players at ben zbazzy university -- benghazi university. it's not clear why they were detained. last month, four u.s. personnel personnel were briefly taken into custody at a checkpoint in libya and then released. california health officials are washing people to get vaccinated for swine flu after a woman died in southern california. so far more than a dozen people have also been hospitalized. at this point, only one person has tested positive for the h1n1 virus but the testing

continues. a swine flu pandemic in 2009 killed at least 150,000 people around the world. now, as for the flu in general, the cdc is reporting widespread throughout breaks mainly in the northeast -- through -- flu outbreaks mainly in the northeast. several cases have been reported in texas, alabama and louisiana. here in california, we're also seeing a spike in flu cases. and with high numbers of hospitalizations already, doctors are saying the worst is yet to come. an oakland startup could emerge as a big winner during next month's super bowl. goldie blocks is one of four finalists to win a three, 30- second commerce tal during the gail. goldie blocks makes toys for girls promoting the use of math and engineering. the company was in dispute with the beastie boys over their

into the front yard. >> firefighters say she could have died in it wasn't for the quick response of forest the dog. >> wow, special dog there. want to check in with sal and see what the situation is like on 280 near daly city in san francisco. >> that's right, tori and dave. right now, southbound 280, we still have most of the freeway closed here in san francisco because of an earlier fatal accident. you can see one lane is getting through on the far right-hand side and there's a little bit of a backup now. we're lucky that today is a lighter day than usual or else this would be affecting the entire region. but for now, southbound 280 is slow coming out after ocean be knee vau. if you want to -- ocean geneva. if you want, you can stay on the surface streets or use 101. northbound, all lanes are open. they were closed, some of them were closed for a while. but they've been reopened. down to one lane just before john daly here at the san francisco daly city border for the investigation of a fatal

crash. let's move along to the bay bridge, westbound. you can see it's light. we don't have a commute here. i think most people are back on monday. but today, still a day off for a lot of people it seems. southbound 101 at mckee in the south bay and san jose, southbound 101 traffic is going to be affected by a crash there. again, even when crashes happen, it's been so light. we don't see big backups as a result. let's go to steve. all right, sal. thank you. a very good morning at the request of our directors i made a comment that steve bridges in the keys, tahoe keys, he e- mailed me and said the street sweeper came by yesterday. not the snowplow. the street sweeper in january. it's so bad, you have to laugh. it's just ridiculously dry here. record dry. so things are really bad in all of california. the only thing we get are above average temperatures. there's nothing happening here. above average temperatures

welcome back. 8:24. for the second time in two weeks, the city of sausalito is dealing with a sewage spill. yesterday, a crew fixing a ruptured sewer main found a spill on fillbert avenue. 500 gallons of raw sewage flowed down the storm drains to dunphy park. environmentalists say hundreds of sewage spills happen around the bay every year. we're not sure why yet but there are more reports of river otters spotted out in the bay area during the last two years. one of the recent sightings, that one right there in the bay near richmond. there have been 600 river otters spotted in la fayette, fremont and in san francisco, in those areas, since 2012.

that's after going more than 20 years of very few sightings at all. scientists say possible reasons are bans on trapping and also cleaner water in the rivers and the bay. 8:25. there's another delay for those passengers who were stranded on a ship stuck in the ice for a week in antarctica. yesterday, a chinese ship in the area used its helicopter to ferry the passengers off their expedition ship to an australian icebreaker. but now the chinese ship may also be stuck on the ice. so the australian icebreaker has been ordered to remain in the area to help out if necessary. meanwhile, 22 russian crew members remain on the expedition ship waiting for the ice to break up. it's fully operational. it's fully prepared to be in the ice. it's well stored and well provisioned. so the risks would be low for the crew. the rescue passengers -- rescued passengers are not

expected to reach australia until mid-january. 8:26. today, california will have its first snow survey of the year but the experts say don't expert a whole lot from the results. according to the national weather service, northern california just completed its driest year since the weather service started keeping track of things back in 1921. today's snow survey is expected to be about 20% of normal. that's a big difference from last year at this same time when it was 150% of normal. just about 8:27 now. a makeshift memorial in santa rosa, one honoring 13-year-old andy lopez went up in flames. the new information we found out just this morning about how that fire started. >> reporter: the legal battle over a 13-year-old on life support continues this morning. we'll tell you what will be happening in federal court as well as county court. good morning. we still have some trouble on the peninsula because of a

after getting out of his car following another accident. so part of southbound 280 is shut down. it's affecting traffic. sal will be here in just about a minute to tell us all how to deal with and avoid this mess. stay tuned. welcome back. friday, january 3rd. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve is talking about your weather. >> our weather is pretty easy. it will be very mild, hazy day. high clouds, it will be very, very cold on sunday for much, not on lynn the great lakes but the green bay. temperature near zero to start. it will continue to drop. the breeze will pick up. breezy, very, very cold conditions. except for the high clouds everything continues to be blocked. just stuck. that's what's happening. 30s 40s to about 50. already 50 in half moon bay. there's much warmer lows this morning. overall, a very quiet pattern. maybe warmer tomorrow and then early next week looks like a

change. a weak system is coming by. it will cool us town. above average temperatures here today. here's sal. we are still following this crash obviously in daly city that happened at about 5:30 this morning. i want to show you the area here because we've been talking about it. the area is still pretty slow because of the closure as you know, the traffic is going to be down to one lane. i'm outlining all of the slow traffic heading south. if you should get on the freeway after john daly boulevard. you will -- you will be in much better shape, this year, this yellow, some people are using el camino real which is not a bad idea but i think the best idea is to use 101 down the peninsula. you can rejoin -- you can rejoin the peninsula traffic at 380, 101 to 380. it looks good heading south. i would do that instead and then avoid the whole area completely. let's take a look at other things. i want to show you that traffic on 880 does look good in both directions. haven't had much of a backup on

this freeway or at the bay bridge toll plaza. as a matter of fact, we've had a nice commute coming up to the pay gates at the toll plaza all day long. there have no been problems on the bridge. i think on this friday, it might be the last day we have traffic. i think a lot of people are back to work on moond. it's 8 -- on monday. it's 8:32. back to the desk. there are two separate court hearings this morning about the fate of 13-year-old jahi mcmath of oakland. one of those hearings starts in a half-hour from right now. jahi's family and oakland's children's hospital is still battleling over what -- battling over what will happen to her next. tara moriarty is live to tell us about the court proceedings today. >> reporter: they will be meeting here at 9:00 this morning at alameda county courthouse for a settlement conference. this is sort of, you know, a time when they talk to the judge to try to resolve something and we know that this is the same thing that issued a temporary restraining order to try to prevent children's hospital from taking jahi off

life support. we don't leave that we'll be able to get into that settlement conference. that's usually something that's on behind closed doors. then later this morning, a settlement hearing is set for 11:00 in federal court. the attorney representing mcmath's family has filed several requests in different courts demanding that doctors insert tubes so jahi's body can be transferred to an outlied long-term facility. medical ectthy sifts say this case creates doubt about whether brain dead is in fact death. >> asking families to say, yeah, i'm ready to give up is not the right way to do this. this is a medical determination by physicians based on consensus within the medical community. >> reporter: engt thill sift -- ectthy sifts say her case is similar to a case in washington, d.c., the parents of a boy sued on religious grounds to keep him in support.

jahi's parents say jahi is responding and they will simply not give up on her. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we also have new information about yesterday's fire in santa rosa at a memorial that honored andy lopez. the wooden altar was built to remember the 134-year-old boy shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy back in october. investigators now say the fire was an accident. it started -- it was started by a burning candle. earlier there was some speculation it was intentionally set. but investigators say it was an accident. volunteers will now spend this weekend rebuilding that memorial. 8:35. the fbi is leading the investigation into a fire set by an arsonist at the entrance to the chinese consulate in san francisco. so far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. a surveillance camera across the street from the consulate caught the fire as it started about 9:30 wednesday night.

the person who set the fire is seen getting in and out of a minivan. some nearby residents say the whole thing makes them nervous. >> i thought it was a one-time incident but at this point, the wheels are turning and i'm wondering if it's related to something else that may occur. i'm a little nervous since i live right around the corner. >> the consulate says the arsonist splashed two buckets of gasoline hob the front of the consulate building and set it on fire. the fbi says it does not appear to be an act of terrorism. at ktvu.com, you will find continuing coverage of the chinese consulate fire including an unedited look at that surveillance video. you will find it in the top story section of our channel 2 website. today, b.a.r.t. union members will start voting on the revised labor contract.

the board's vote signaled the end of a long labor dispute that included two strikes last year. b.a.r.t.'s atu union members boat today. seiu members will vote on january 13th. city college of san francisco has received a bit of a break in the battle to keep the school from shutting down. a judge temporarily blocked the accrediting commission from finalizing its plans to termy nat city -- terminate city college's accreditation as long ax the matter is being litigated. the judge acknowledged the devastating acts of losing this and what effect it would have on students and the school. the city attorney calls that ruling a victory. some are saying the weather at this sunday's 49ers/packers game would be worse than the ice bowl game played more than 45 years ago. dave clark says that was a great game. >> it was a great game, tori. >> well, brian flores is live in the newsroom with how some

brave fans heading to green bay plan to keep warm. they have quite a challenge. >> they do. that game was well before my time. we've heard from fans who are headed to green bay. some say they will be wearing seven layers of clothing. you know, they have good reasons. temperatures at game time would be 10 below zero. that's why it's called the frozen ton da. the 1967 ice bowl game, the championship game between the packers and cowboys, holds the record for the coldest game. during the game, it was 13 below with the windchill that made it feel like it was 38 below zero. everyone talks about how hard it is to get tickets because of the history. this cold weather is being blamed for this game not being a sellout, at least not yet. we're hearing less than 1,000 tickets remain for the game. even fans got e-mails on great deals on ticket and transportation packages trying to urge them to travel to green bay. we caught up with a packers' fan who lives in neab. he -- in napa.

he says his brother urged him to go to the game. >> he lied to me. he said 18 above. it will be 5 below. i'm prete surprising -- i'm precy excited -- pretty excited. >> we saw some tickets going for $125 apiece but, of course, you also have to have find a plane ticket as well. now if you are a betting person as well, experts say it will be close. but the 9ers are three-point favorites heading into the game. we're live in the newsroom, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> keep our fingers crossed. ed lee has made a friendly wager on the game with the mayor of green bay. the loser has to visit a school in his hometown wearing a cap from the opposing team and read to children. also part of the bet, a care package of tweets. for lee, it's ghiradelli's chocolates and bob's doughnuts. you can watch sunday's game right here on ktvu channel 2.

a day after starting the new year off with a thud, stocks are now mixed in very light trading. the holiday shortened week combined with the snowstorm today is making volume anemic. boeing leading the stocks higher with a 1% gain with machinists voting on a contract today. the dow up 21. nasdaq, though, down 13. s&p down slightly. 8:44. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following for you right now. these are live pictures. and right now, the chp is looking for a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian early this morning on a daly city freeway. it happened about 5:30 this morning on 280 near the john daly boulevard offramp. you can see traffic is now starting to move again after hours of long delays. also, marin county fire crews are still watching for

hot spots from last night's very stubborn grass fire near a popular shopping mall. it started about 11:00 p.m. in a marsh east of the village shopping mall in corte madera. investigators say the fire started in a homeless camp. right now, that big winter storm is pounding much of the eastern united states this morning. parts of the massachusetts, they already have two feet of snow. a state of emergency has been ordered for new york state. and more than 2,000 flights have been canceled around the united states because of that storm. ktvu's janine de la vega has been out at sfo -- you've been out there all morning. what's the latest on how the flights here are affected. janine? >> reporter: dave, i've been monitoring the boards all morning. it's not bad here at sfo. you know, i've checked as far as cancellations go and so far, there's been 13 cancelations but they've all been from flights arriving from the east here to sfo. there's just been one

cancellation departing from sfo today. now, the heavy yes snowfall in the middle east and northwest is causing a lot of problems for airports there. the number of canceled flights keeps growing every hour. flighttracker.com is reporting more than 2,000 canceled flights and there's about the same amount of delays. the airports hardest hit are la guardia, boston, j.f.k. at logan airport, officials grounded all nights overnight until about 5:00 a.m. j.f.k. was closed overnight but it reopened a couple of hours ago. we poke to passengers departing sfo who were concerned about traveling that direction. >> i wassing checking the weather -- i was checking the weather channel and checking on google to see my flight schedule. it says it's on time. so it's all right. >> reporter: is it supposed to snow when you arrive? >> it's supposed to stop at 3:00. i arrive at 6:00. >> reporter: nearly all departing flights from sfo are

on time. but airport officials are encouraging you to check your status or call before the airport. overall, things seem to be running a lot smoother compared to what other airports are experiencing back east. reporting live from sfo, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. since we're talking about the cold weather. look at this. instead of frying an egg on a sidewalk, in minnesota, they are freezing an egg. it took five minutes to freeze it solid. no runny yolk here. in international fall, minnesota along the border with canada, it was 40 below zero yesterday morning. new information now on a suspected sal none mon fell law outbreak at a northern california cheese producer. state health inspectors are working with the company to see whether the problem happened at the plant or was introduced from outside. the cultured kitchen in west sacramento has recalled all flavors of its cashew cheese because of possible

contamination. the recalled products have expiration dates up to april 19th, 2014. they were sold at natural food stores and farmers markets in the bay area, sacramento valley, and reno. sergio garcia says he hopes the california supreme court ruling allowing him to practice law even though he's in the u.s. illegally will open the door to other immigrants in the same situation. the california supreme court ruled yesterday that 36-year- old sergio garcia of chico should be allowed to practice law in california. the ruling came after the state legislature recently approved a law that specifically authorizes the state to give law licenses to immigrants who are here illegally. >> what what california loss, a lot of people follow. i know new york is facing the same issue. >> even though garcia has a law license, federal law makes it illegal for law firms to hire

him. society garcia plans to open his own practice and be a personal injury attorney in chico. all right. 8:48. let's check back with sal. have you fixed things on the peninsula yet? >> we're trying to. the lane being opened and this being a light day things have improved. if you are driving on 280, the lanes are open here on southbound 280 and on northbound 280. that's northbound 280 and then southbound 280 some. lanes are still closed down to one lane here. however, the backup isn't that severe. there's a little bit of a backup in the area but it's not all that severe. southbound 280 traffic is narrowed down to one lane as you can see as they clean up and investigate the fatal crash that happened at around 5:30. moving along and taking a look at the alternate, i would say el camino real is a decent one. get on the freeway after john daly if you can. let's get to another live picture. this would be 237. normally stop and go here. it looks good. let's go to steve. all right, sal.

thank you. a very good morning. a very few high clouds around. a quiet day. signs of maybe a different pattern next week. i don't think it will bring much rain. tomorrow looks wild to warm. unseasonably -- mild to warm. unseasonably warm for us. national weather service -- i think it was milwaukee showing the windchills for sunday night, about 40 to 60 below. this may be too warm, minus 8. really bitterly cold arctic air coming in. we do have a lot of high clouds here. that's for sure. mainly to the south and the peninsula. but the temperatures are above average. there is a puff of an offshore breeze. high pressure seems very content to hang around here. hazy sunshine. it's called a blocking pattern. everything is blocked. we need a hole breakdown of what's going on with the jet stream in order for us to get a pattern thing. we don't see that. 30s 40s to near 50. 50 almost san francisco. that's a sign that they may get

the offshore breeze. 40s for some. 20s up in the mountains. the snow is wining down rapidly. essex county, massachusetts, i think picked up the most. i think two feet for a couple of locations. some of the snow is coming in. here's the system. that's the one that will give the dangerous windchills any travel plans, businesswise or whatever. i mean, it's monday, tuesday. you might want to hold off on that. it's record-lomax temperatures. for us, another quiet day. hazy day. temperatures warming up. afternoon temperatures. it looks like 70 for some. a lot of 60s in entwo. we should be closer to 57, 64. some areas are well above that. they've been there for the longest time. eventually the pattern has to change. we don't see much happening. it looks like a couple of weak systems will brush us. i don't see much rain. don't see much rain through january 20th. warm, breezy, saturday, sunday. a little cooler early next
